Disadvantages of sleeping on your right side

For good health and proper body function, it’s important to sleep well. According to experts, it’s recommended that people sleep between 6 and 8 hours a day. If you sleep less than this amount, you’ll feel tired and your body may become unbalanced, leading to mental and physical health problems. Likewise, if you sleep more than 8 hours, you’ll feel tired.

However, it’s not just how long you sleep that’s important, but also how you sleep. Sleeping in a bad position—especially on your right side—impacts the proper functioning of some organs.

It does not help lymphatic drainage

It’s not good to sleep on your right side, according to medical expert David Gavilanes. Why? Well, this is because it compromises the proper functioning of lymphatic drainage.

The lymphatic system is responsible for transporting nutrient waste from the cells to the blood and then expelling it from the body. If this system doesn’t function properly, edema forms, which are accumulations of fluids and other substances.

When you sleep in a bad position, the lymphatic system’s processes are delayed.

It’s bad for the heart

If we sleep in a bad position, our heart doesn’t function properly. The problem is that the arteries are located on the left side of the body; if we sleep on our right side, they will have difficulty transporting blood, as they would first have to pump blood upwards.

Slows down digestion

When we sleep on our right side, stomach acids can easily rise into the esophagus, ultimately causing heartburn.
