José Guadalupe “N,” known on social media as “Don Nico,” died after spending three days hospitalized after being shot while broadcasting live in the municipality of Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico.
The man, popular for his Facebook page “Helados Nico,” was the victim of a shooting attack after receiving extortion calls and threats before and after the attack.
The attack occurred while José Guadalupe was recording a video at the entrance to the Urireo community, in the south of the municipality.
In the broadcast, “Don Nico” pointed out the poor condition of the road and the lack of bus stops for those waiting for the bus.
As he was showing the potholes on his phone, a motorcycle carrying two men approached; the passenger pulled out a gun and fired several shots at him, leaving him wounded on the ground.
The cell phone continued recording the scene for 45 minutes. The video shows the attackers returning to shoot him again. Wounded, the man managed to offer farewells to his family and messages of protest to the local authorities, which generated widespread dissemination on social media.
“I’m dying… let it be a legacy for the people that this fucking government is garbage. I love you… take care of my children, educate my children well, I love you,” Don Nico managed to say before being taken to a hospital.
During the early hours of Saturday, October 11, relatives of the merchant confirmed his death from three gunshot wounds.
The municipal government later issued a statement expressing regret over the death and reiterating that the family had been supported in response to the threats they had received.
“Now it turns out that he was a good man, a hard worker, with many dreams ahead of him and who from a very young age managed to achieve what he dreamed of so much with so much effort… now anyone comes along and puts an end to all that, and ends it all in a few seconds, ending his life and leaving his family devastated, his wife and children, brothers and his father,” wrote a niece of Don Nico on social media.
