Man sent to jail for chasing and murdering his partner with a machete on a street in La Unión, in the Valley

The Attorney General’s Office obtained a court order to detain Hernando de Jesús Suárez Hernández, 44, for the femicide of his former partner, in events that occurred on January 22, in the municipality of La Unión, Valle del Cauca.

The incident occurred early in the morning on a public street in the El Jardín neighborhood of the aforementioned municipality. Evidence shows that, as recorded on video, the man chased and attacked Diana Carolina Serna, 37, with a machete, decapitating her instantly.

Suárez Hernández, 44, who had been released from prison on a 72-hour permit, was caught in the act by agents of the Technical Investigation Corps (CTI) and the Sijín of the National Police.

The Prosecutor’s Office charged him with the crime of aggravated femicide, and a judge of guarantees decided that the man must comply with the security measure in a prison center.

So far this year, nine femicides have been recorded: five in Atlántico, two in Valle del Cauca, one in Santander, one in Antioquia, and one attempted femicide in Bogotá. In 2023, there were 410 femicides, more than one case per day.

In the same department of Valle, the Attorney General’s Office, in isolated cases, managed to get judges of guarantees to send to jail two alleged perpetrators of physical, verbal and psychological abuse of their former romantic partners, in the municipalities of Tuluá and Zarzal.

In Tuluá, the case involves Mauricio Alejandro Baena Saavedra, who was captured with a court order on January 17 by agents of the Technical Investigation Corps (CTI) and the National Police.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Baena Saavedra allegedly argued with his former partner, and then pulled out a firearm and placed it on a table as a sign of defiance. He also allegedly threatened to “smash her head in” and “stab her” if their daughter made any mistakes. The Prosecutor’s Office charged him with aggravated domestic violence.
