NATIONAL ALERT ! THE MONSTER HAS AWAKENED AGAIN! A 7.7 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE SHAKES MEXICO CITY WITH UNIMAGINABLE FURY, LEAVING A TRAIL OF ABSOLUTE PANIC, CHAOS, AND PRELIMINARY REPORTS OF DESTRUCTION. THE WORLD CAME CRASHING DOWN ON US, MEXICO CITY RESIDENTS!

[URGENT REPORT / BREAKING NEWS CDMX]

Stop everything you’re doing! Put down your coffee, pull over if you’re driving, and hold onto the nearest door frame because this is not a drill, I repeat, THIS IS NOT A DRILL! The recurring nightmare of the capital’s residents, that ghost we thought was asleep, has re-emerged from the depths of the earth with a violence that has frozen our souls.

That notification that just popped up on your phone, that truncated headline you read with your heart in your throat saying,  “Breaking news: A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake shakes Mexico City…see more ,” unfortunately, IT IS REAL. And reality surpasses any alert text.

The ground of the great city of Tenochtitlán has trembled as rarely before in its recent history. A preliminary magnitude 7.7 earthquake, with its epicenter yet to be confirmed by the National Seismological Service but which felt as if hell itself were opening up beneath our feet, has struck the nation’s capital and surrounding states.

CHRONICLE OF A TERRORIST MIDDAY: WHEN THE DAMNED ALERT SOUNDED

It was a “normal” day in chaotic Mexico City. Office workers in their offices, students in classrooms, the usual maddening traffic. Suddenly, the sound most feared by any Mexican broke the routine. That metallic, guttural wail from the C5 loudspeakers:  “EARTHQUAKE ALERT, EARTHQUAKE ALERT . ”

Oh my! Those seconds of anticipation, that eternal lapse between the alarm sounding and the shaking starting, were the prelude to panic. And then, BAM! The impact came.

It wasn’t a gentle sway. Witnesses in neighborhoods like Roma, Condesa, Tlatelolco, and the Historic Center reported a  brutal, trembling motion  at the beginning, a vertical jolt that made it feel like the buildings wanted to lift off the ground, followed by an endless, oscillating “dance” that seemed like it would never stop. Lamps flickered, windows shattered, car alarms went wild, and the earth rumbled—that deep, resonant sound that vibrates in your chest—took over everything.

PANIC IN THE STREETS! HUMAN STAMPEDES AND NERVOUS BREAKDOWNS

The images reaching our newsroom in real time are horrific. Rivers of people pouring into the streets, many in shock, others weeping aloud, still others kneeling in prayer on the sidewalks. On Paseo de la Reforma, skyscrapers swayed like palm trees in a hurricane, while thousands of workers evacuated the towers, terror etched on their faces.

“I thought the building was going to collapse, I swear to God I thought we were going to be killed!” Doña Rosa, who was on the 12th floor in the Del Valle neighborhood, told us between sobs. “It was shaking horribly, everything was crashing, things were falling off the shelves. It was endless, it never seemed to end!”

Public transportation collapsed in seconds. The subway stopped in the tunnels, creating scenes of claustrophobia and anguish among passengers who had to walk along the dark tracks. The Metrobús and buses were stranded on avenues that turned into giant parking lots as people tried to flee on foot.

THE DAMAGE ASSESSMENT: THE CITY WOUNDED AGAIN

Pay close attention! Information is trickling in and chaos reigns, but the first reports are alarming. Dense clouds of dust have risen in several areas of the city, an unmistakable sign that  structures have collapsed .

The sirens of ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars are the soundtrack to this unfolding tragedy. Major gas leaks are reported in several boroughs; the smell of mercaptan is pervasive in areas of Cuauhtémoc and Benito Juárez. PLEASE DO NOT LIGHT MATCHES OR LIGHTERS! Turn off the gas valves if you can do so safely!

Walls have collapsed, facades have been torn off, and unofficial reports indicate that at least two old buildings in the city center succumbed to the onslaught. Phone lines are jammed (don’t call, use WhatsApp or text messages!), and much of the city is without power, increasing uncertainty and fear as the afternoon progresses.

THE GHOSTS OF ’85 AND 2017: THE COLLECTIVE TRAUMA THAT WON’T HEAL

We cannot ignore it. In the mind of every Mexico City resident, this earthquake revives wounds that never fully healed. The ghosts of 1985 and, more recently, of September 19, 2017, are present in every anguished glance, in every desperate embrace.

Mexico City, this courageous metropolis built on an unstable lakebed, is once again facing its toughest test. The collective post-traumatic stress is palpable. People don’t want to return to their homes or offices. Parks and medians are filled with people eyeing the surrounding buildings with suspicion, fearing an aftershock that will finish off what remains damaged.

ALERT, MEXICO! THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING: EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS ACTIVATED

Federal and local authorities have activated Plan DN-III-E and maximum emergency protocols. The President of the Republic and the Head of Government are about to address the nation. Army, Navy, and National Guard personnel are being deployed to assist in damage assessment and, unfortunately, search and rescue operations in the disaster zones.

URGENT RECOMMENDATIONS (PAY ATTENTION, FOR YOUR LIFE!):

  1. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS!  Under no circumstances, even if it’s light. You could get trapped or they could plummet.
  2. KEEP AWAY FROM DOWNED WINDOWS AND POWER WIRES!  There is a risk of electrocution and falling glass.
  3. PREPARE FOR AFTERSHOCKS!  An earthquake of this magnitude 7.7 ALWAYS brings significant aftershocks. Don’t let your guard down. Keep your emergency kit ready.
  4. SOLIDARITY, DAMMIT!  If you’re doing well, help your neighbor, the elderly, anyone you see in crisis. This is Mexico, and here, no one gets left behind.

This is a developing story. The situation is critical and changing by the minute. Stay tuned to our broadcast, follow only official sources, and do not spread rumors that only create more panic.

Stay strong, Mexico City! Stay strong, Chilangos! We’ve overcome worse, and we’ll rise from this too, but the blow has been brutal. Today, the earth reminded us who’s in charge. Today, we are all survivors again.

We will continue to provide minute-by-minute updates. May God protect us all!
